THE MASTERS * TESTIMONIAL by Rebecca Kerr

COURSE: Spanish Fine Arts and History

I was very interested by the advertisement on FACEBOOK for a series of lectures on the Spanish Masters and was even more pleased that I attended.

Karla took us on a chronological stroll and sometimes a canter through the life and works of the five Spanish Masters. A lot of time, effort and research had obviously been put into making the lectures flow and in selecting and presenting the best possible slides of the painting to the group.

The classroom environment was perfect for the level of understanding that was required although the AC was a bit fierce!

I learnt a lot without being overwhelmed and was disappointed not to have been able to make the road trip to Toledo and Madrid to see some of the original artworks but hope to make the trip with another group.

REVIEW:
I saw the advert for the course on Facebook and if I’m honest, I was initially more interested in the history of Spain side than in the art as I never really thought of myself as an art lover.

However, thanks to Karla’s excellent (and often wacky!) way of explaining the works and lives of the Spanish masters that so clearly inspire her, I came to appreciate the paintings too.

The course has opened my eyes to a whole new interest, so much so that on a recent trip to Montserrat my partner was quite surprised to hear me exclaiming “Wow! There are some Picasso’s and Dali’s in this museum – we HAVE to go in!!!”

Maybe I should enroll him on the next course!

Thank you, Karla

REVIEW:
During the months of October and November 2013 I took a course of Spanish fine arts with Karla Darocas in Jávea. We met on a Monday morning in Hemeroscopea in a very pleasant room with excellent infrastructure (much light, good air conditioning/ heating system, IT facilities plus, oh bliss, a coffee machine in the hall and some home made – guilt free-cakes from the teacher).

Karla gave an overview of the five Spanish masters we were going to learn about in detail afterwards, so that the course consisted of six encounters in total.

The way Karla presents and teaches is attractive and catches one’s interest and concentration. These mornings were a real joy and left an impression of wanting to hear and know more and more!

To complement the theory and insights into the lives and works of these giants, El Greco, Velazquez, Goya, Picasso and Dalí, we went on a fun field trip to Toledo and Madrid. The dynamics of these towns are quite an experience when one is used to the tranquil Costa Blanca area, but the very informative extra’s from Karla contributed to  an adventurous experience never to forget and recommended to the fullest!

I saw a poster for the course when taking my daughter to summer school at Hermeroscopea.

The facilities at the school are excellent.  I loved Karla's teaching style which is enthusiastic to say the least and very inclusive.

I felt I have learnt a lot and it has encouraged me to think of similar courses.  I would certainly recommend the course to others and have already done so!

Do keep in touch Karla!

REVIEW:
This course exceeded my expectations and was so enjoyable.

Karla made every painting come to life with gossip and stories about the people in it and the artists themselves. Every class made me excited about going to the next one.

I would thoroughly recommend this course to anyone. You will be fascinated, learn so much and have fun at the same time.

REVIEW:
Dear Karla.

Thank you so much for running the Art History course. It was really interesting and has opened my mind to so many new things.

I knew very little about art and have always dismissed certain types of art without knowing anything about the paintings or the artists.

Now, through the course, I know more about the Spanish masters, both about their lives and their innovative techniques. I now appreciate what the artists were trying to depict.

Learning in the classroom is one thing but being able visit Toledo and Madrid on the road trip, to see some of the original paintings, was something else. It was a wonderful weekend.

Thank you for all your hard work.

REVIEW:
The reason I joined the course was my love of art, although not really knowing anything about it. Also Salvador Dali was included in the list of Masters to be studied so I had no option but to sign up, did I!

The first day was an overview of the course, and already I felt out of my depth, but each week Karla explained things so clearly and in a 'down to earth' manner that I began to appreciate just how amazing these artists were. The paintings really came to life and I feel that in the six weeks of the course I have learned more about art than I have in the whole of my 66 years!

Karla's enthusiasm and knowledge of the subject is outstanding and captured the imagination of the whole class.

Velásquez lecture 2013

"What an interesting morning learning about the great master painter Velásquez.

I have always been interested in Art but now I feel really knowledgeable and the next time I visit an art gallery I will be oh so snug as I contemplate the painting with my new found knowledge .

You have brought these painters and their works to life Karla and ignited what I know will be an enduring interest in the great works of Art.

I look forward to more lectures, films and of course visits with the other very interesting people I met at your lectures.

Thanks, Lorna Ainsworth

SHIRLEY MARTIN * TESTIMONIAL

I have known Karla all her life. She has always been interested in the Visual Arts even as a child.

She studied fine arts at university and in Spain and became an artist of note.

Her keen eye for colour and proportion make her a natural for photographing all the beauty that surrounds us.  I am so impressed with how she captures her subjects, especially the ones in nature.

Her composition skills are unsurpassed and she makes sure to find “the story” in all of her photographs.  She also has a way of tweaking pictures to make them look like paintings.

Her colourful photos are always a joy to see, whether they are beautiful vistas or interesting insects in the garden.  Her dogs are favourite subjects as well.

I would definitely like to take a walking tour with her through one of the many villages in Spain and see and photograph sights as seen through her eyes.

Her course will be guaranteed to be informative and fun!  She has so much knowledge and experience to impart.

PHOTOGRAPHY * TESTIMONIAL

After taking the 'Discover Beauty' course with Karla Darocas, I learned to view photographic subjects from a new perspective.

The classroom theory offered valuable insights into visual techniques such as 'harmony, 'form', 'texture', 'perspective', and 'rhythm and repetition'.

Javea old town has a wealth of fantastic buildings and interesting corners to discover with a camera.

Thoroughly enjoyed this course.

DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

My son Scott set up a slide show on the TV last night of his and Peter´s photos taken on Tuesday night at your PhotoWalk. Wow - I was so impressed.

They took close ups and looked at interesting shapes and colours and unusual angles.

Thank you for showing them how exciting photography can be (and how beautiful Javea is)

DISCOVER BEAUTY- PHOTO WALK * TESTIMONIAL

My ‘Discover Beauty’ photo walk class with Karla Darocas was very exciting.

First of all it was a joy to watch the introductory video with a range of photos accompanied by uplifting music. The multi-media presentation is coordinated with a very clear instruction sheet that includes details about how to discover beauty in a photo, like symmetry, harmony, balanced or with rhythm and repetition, etc.

Then we all walked outside into the beautiful old town of Jávea to actually see and feel these different principles of beauty in the urban landscape.

Karla is an entertaining and grounded teacher who not only points out the lighting and colour of objects but also adds fascinating art-history details about – in this case- Jávea like the story behind the fort-church of San Bartolome.

After the walk, the group gathered at a café for drinks and the students exchanging experiences and results of their photo shoot. This was as educational as the whole evening. After 33 years visiting Jávea with regularity, I saw this enchanting centre in a completely new perspective!

KARLA AND CAMERA GO TOGETHER

Karla and cameras go together. I have known Karla for the past 30 years and in all that time Karla has had a camera with her whenever she is out and about - whether it's for fun on holidays or to record a special event.

Back in the eighties, when I first met Karla, she was writing fashion articles for the Toronto Sun and I was lucky enough to get to tag along for some fun and on photo shoots and see firsthand how she worked.

As a journalist, she has always taken her own photos to back up her articles. She has always been a complete package covering not only fashion but artists and bands - whatever.

Whether studio portraits or live performance shots she can capture the personality or mood of the moment. Her photos speak.

In the nineties in Waterloo, Canada, Karla used her dark room to create surrealist effects and photo montages the hard way before Photoshop was developed!

Never shy of getting to grips with new technology and mastering it, Karla’s knowledge of photography is bang up to date with years of experience as a working photographer and artist behind her.

These skill and knowledge combined with her passion for life and in depth knowledge of Spanish history and local knowledge should make her photography tours of the Javea region something worth experiencing.
